Friday October 21st, 2016 Dyn Inc. suffered a cyber-attack against the Domain Name Server (DNS) which blocked access to Twitter, Spotify, Netflix, Amazon, Tumblr, Reddit, The New York Times and many various other sites throughout the day. DNS is used to facilitate the loading of webpages. According to USA Today, the hackers used a malware program called Mirai, which has the ability to send thousands and even hundreds of thousands of server requests at once, to create a flood of fake traffic and overwhelm a DNS. According to a reporter, this incident is under investigation by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
